I picked this book up to read on a recent trip. I was intrigued by chapter 3 and had trouble putting it down by chapter 7. The story line is multi-dimensional and complex in its presentation. This book did a really great job of helping me to understand some of the complex social issues facing our nation and world today, and I am a better human being for having read it. My heart is more open to people of different social upbringing and sexual orientation after the author's magnificent presentation of a side of an issue to which I had no previous exposure.

Most of us don't spend much time thinking what it would be like to have been born the opposite gender, or born with the feeling of being assigned one physical gender with the inner feeling of belonging to the opposite gender. Today's society has little room for the small minority of people with gender identity issues. Because they are in the minority does not make them insignificant and unimportant.

What the author accomplishes by telling her story allows her to demonstrate the universal truths that bind us together as a human race - despite our differences in beliefs, ethics, politics, etc. we all have the same basic needs and desires, and our differences pale in comparison to our similarities despite how things may seem at first glance. We fear what we do not understand. I now understand things I did not prior to reading this book. I will probably be forever changed, in a good way, for having read and understood this book and the point of view it portrays.

I found this book absolutely fascinating, gripping and in short, a terrific "read"--from the opening word to the ending word. And of course I learned a lot, while enjoying the very complex tale with its many strands woven in and throughout. An amazing tapestry about a subject area unfamiliar to me. I became another of the many fans of this remarkable book. My hat is off to the author for her courage--and brilliance--in writing this engaging book about a tough subject to address. Thank you.
Suspense-filled "She's My Dad" is a book you don't want to put down! From the opening paragraph the reader is sucked in as the story unfolds from the perspectives of the well-developed characters as they each deal with life in different ways.

The battle between good and evil is centered around the main character in the book who is a transsexual person. Those who are closed-minded tend to be judgmental and hateful. Others struggle to change attitudes and perceptions.

Iolanthe Woulff knows how to weave intrigue throughout a plot that deals with homophobia and transphobia in a conservative culture.

I had to read the book in one sitting! A really good read!

She's My Dad needs to be in every public library. Two eyes, each a different color (heterochromia iridum), becomes central to the story in which transgender Nikie Farrell bonds with a son she fathered whilst a college student at the very university where she is now an instructor in the English department. You'll hate the red necks and love, love, love Nikie's campus allies. Share in the joys and sorrows of a member of the trans community as she relates this page-turning journey.
Most of my prior reading relating to transsexual and transgender issues has been of an academic/scholarly nature, or first person accounts; so the prospect of a novel about a transsexual woman returning to her alma mater several decades after having unknowingly fathered a son sounded interesting. Interesting, it turns out, is a HUGE understatement! I could barely put this engaging book down--and what I had planned for a leisurely weekend read turned out to be an almost non-stop read in one afternoon!

Ms Woulff's richly drawn characters and gripping, intertwined subplots both elucidate and subject the reader to a whole range of emotions--hatred, fear, sadness, contempt, but throughout-- and ultimately--love. One needn't be a member of the LGBT community to be inspired by this book. Indeed, only the most jaded among us would fail to see--and grow by--the valuable lessons it offers.
This is a novel that was well worth the wait. The author writes from her heart in this riveting, well-written, suspenseful and intricate story containing all the elements you would ever want to have in a transgender romance, set against the background of domestic terrorism. With an ingenious and well-researched plot, the author sensitively weaves and ties together the elements of psychopathic hatred, transphobia and homophobia into a tale of love, heroism and eventual redemption. Fortunately for the protagonists, the "redemption" they experience is not of the same variety that the central villain had in mind.
I give this book five stars due to the excellent character development and plotting. It is long, but once I started, I couldn't put it down. I savored the twists and turns along the way, and how good and evil was portrayed. Controversial issues were incorporated into the story, (and I put !controversial' in brackets) with care and intelligence. I haven't enjoyed a 'good read' this much in some time.
I just finished "She's My Dad" and I thought it was excellent. It got me very wrapped up in the characters early on and kept me that way right through the whole book. Well, as it was, not through the WHOLE book! Seems I didn't really know what "Epilogue" meant and ended the book before I read that part. Being so wrapped up as I was and anxious to see how things ended, bad over evil I hoped, where I ended caused me so much anger that I threw the book on the floor! God, it couldn't end this way!! It just couldn't! It was 11pm, I turned off the light and rolled over trying to sleep. The next day I read the Epilogue! It's probably not recommended that one read She's My Dad that way but looking back it set me up for a wonderful high! I loved it all through the book and highly recommend it. Definitely not too long for the story that was told.
