Lapointe advises Maigret at his apartment that Inspector Lognon, a plain-clothes detective, has been wounded. When Lognon is on the trail of something he makes a mystery of it. The concierge at the address on Avenue Junot says she heard a car and then shots. At the time Lognon seemed to be seeing an apparition. Lognon's wife is a hypochondriac. Madame Maigret takes her in to comfort her while Lognon is in a coma from the attemped murder.

Maigret goes to see a Dutchman, a rich art collector, whose household has been under a sort of surveillance by an ancient inhabitant of the Avenue Junot. Msigret has a feeling that someone is in danger but he doesn't know the person's identity. He calls Scotland Yard because the Dutchman's wife was married formerly to a man named Muir.

As the mystery is uncovered, the subject of the forgery of paintings emerges. It seems that the police officer became a shooting victim through a misunderstanding that he was a member of a rival gang. The economy of the writing, the terse style used, is one of the pleasures of reading the works of Georges Simenon.
A few summers ago I read one of the Maigret novels (everyone loves them!) that I had picked up in a Goodwill . I remember finishing it but not being particularly impressed.

Somehow this week Simenon popped back into my mind, so I picked up two novels at the library. I agree with the reviewer below who calls this Simenon at his best. This novel immediately sucks you into the story within just a few pages, and it's fun watching the wheels turn in Maigret's mind. Simenon's language ( or, its English translation) is deceptively simple, yet the characters in this short novel all really come to life. Plus, Simenon has nice asides that reward the attentive reader.

Highly recommended; I will try some more of these.

Inspector Maigret likes to tell his admirers that he has no technique. Each case is solved in its own way. Those of us who love the series get to see the many facets of Maigret's brilliance. The fun of "Maigret and the Appiration" is that we get to see the Inspector in his role as the brilliant interrogator. He is smart, incisive and unrelenting in this role.

"Maigret and the Apparition" is a good example of Simenon's writing when he was in his prime. Recommended.
Georges Simenon has written 75 novels featuring the adventures of Inspector Maigret of the Paris police force. "Adventures" is a little too strong a word for what happens within. It's another day in the somewhat routine police work of the pipe-smoking, wife-loving, alcohol imbibing, middle-aged inspector. It's not the flying bullets, the careening car chases, and the brawling fisticuffs that attract me to his stories. There are almost none to be found. It's the intelligent investigation of interesting crimes as Maigret and his staff weed out the facts from fiction, the guilty from the red herrings that attracts me to these books and is why I now own almost all of them. I have said it before and I will say it again, Maigret is like a forerunner of American TV's Columbo. In this case, he is investigating the attempted murder of a colleague that takes the Inspector into the world of art fraud, greed, and cruelty. It's a fast read from front to back and ends with me muttering, "Well done, Inspector."
Simenon and his creation Maigret are not to be consumed in great gulps. Those seeking thrills and horror should look elsewhere.

The immense subtlety of Simenon is his understanding of human nature. For me, in this novel, this insight is epitomized by the series of amazing interviews he conducts with the wealthy aristocratic art collector. Initially disdainful of the Chief Inspector, and withholding of information, we witness the gradual changing of dynamic as Maigret pierces the veil of propriety and hauteur. The questioning of the collector's wife in the collector's presence is a masterpiece of chamber music (like a string trio) as each instrument sings a different melody that is independent, yet interrelated. The final sections of the novel gather speed quickly as investigations are carried out in multiple locations in or near Paris, the Riviera and Italy, and the culmination is symphonic. At the end, we are left with Maigret's sadness and sympathy for,human nature, flawed as it, and guilty of great crimes, as it is. A novel of distilled magic -- not a word too much or too little. Flawless, perhaps.
